6 Tamron Lenses Are Now Compatible with the Nikon Z7 via the FTZ Adapter

One of the things we love about the new Nikon Z7 and Nikon Z6 is the fact that you don't have to sell your F-mount lenses to use them. Simply pop on the Nikon FTZ adapter, and you can use over 300 NIKKOR F-mount lenses going back several decades.

But, if you were a Nikon shooter with third-party lenses from someone like Tamron, you've been out of luck since the Z7 launched. Our unauthorized experiments with several Tamron lenses resulted in an error message on the back of the camera. Forget autofocus, the shutter button didn't work.

All of that changes today, with Tamron's announcement of new Ver.2 firmware updates for the following F-mount lenses:

If you own any of the above lenses, updating is easy.

A) You can do it yourself with the separately-sold $60 Tamron TAP-in Console, a must have if you own several Tamron lenses

OR

B) Call Tamron USA's customer service (see below) to arrange shipping for the lens to have Tamron USA update the firmware for you.

WHAT ABOUT THE NIKON Z6?

There's no word on Nikon Z6 compatibility yet, which makes sense -- it's launching today -- but we'll be sure to test that too as soon as we get our hands on one of the updated lenses. Still, it's a good sign of things to come for F-mount Tamron owners looking to jump into the Nikon mirrorless universe, or anyone looking for more-affordable-than-NIKKOR options for their mirrorless Nikon camera.

Notice of Firmware Update for Tamron Lens Compatibility

with Nikon Z7 and FTZ Adapter

November 16, 2018, Saitama, Japan - Tamron Co., Ltd. announced that new firmware versions are now available for three Tamron models (listed below). The new firmware versions make the three models compatible with Nikon Z7 and FTZ adapter for general operations .

Applicable models

• SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Model A025) for Nikon

• SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 (Model A022) for Nikon

• 17-35mm F/2.8-4 Di OSD (Model A037) for Nikon

The lens firmware can be updated with the separately sold TAP-in Console. Customers may also contact Tamron USA's service department at 1-800-827-8880, option 1 for information on sending in the lens for the update.
