Tamron 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Di VC OSD Zoom Lens Review

What we love. The Tamron 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Di VC OSD (Model A043) is truly a one size fits all lens for most photographers. The capability to shoot with a zoom lens that goes from 35mm to 150mm at such a low aperture is mind-blowing. The $799 MSRP is equally as mind-blowing given the sharpness and the bokeh produced by this lens. The size is equally as pleasing, given the capability of zoom and its lack of bulkiness. Overall this lens is such a excellent deal for all you get out of it.

What we’d change. We'd love to see a Sony E-mount version and we think the EF-mount version needs a firmware update to make it compatible with the EOS R and EOS RP mirrorless cameras.

Pick this up if… You are looking for a zoom lens that does it all with low aperture capability. If you are a Nikon or a Canon owner, I would recommend investing in this to complete your zoom lens line-up.

I don’t believe we can state enough what a smart investment this lens is to your zoom lens collection. Tamron put every aspect of a high-end zoom into the 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Di VC OSD (Model A043). The fact that they made this lens so affordable puts it above any other compared lenses.

Tamron’s ability to innovate is undeniable. Their line-up of lenses has been proven to be a well-rounded group of great glass and this lens is no exception. I have shot wedding photography with their lenses for three years and have never been disappointed. The 35-150 f2.8-4 will be a staple in my zoom lens line-up after testing it.

This lens is perfect for either portrait or landscape photographers who don’t feel as if they want to carry around a ton of their primes lenses while shooting their work. From portraits to landscapes, its portability was a definite plus.

This lens is offered for the DSLR shooter. It is made for the Canon EF mount or the Nikon F mount. I tested the Tamron 35-150 f2.8-f4 on the Canon 5D Mark IV, Canon EOS R with an adaptor and adapted it onto the Nikon Z6.

The compactness of this lens is definitely the top feature. This lens is built similarly to other Tamron lenses with a satin finish and gold trim around the lens. This lens definitely has all the quality of Tamron’s higher-end lenses.

The minimal buttons on this lens include the AF/MF switch and the switch for the VC. There is a zoom ring on this lens which showed little to no resistance while shooting. It seemed to be buttery smooth to go to each focal length and was sturdy enough to stay at the desired focal length you landed upon. There is a focusing ring at the front of the lens which I didn’t really feel the need to use. The build over-all of this lens is just like the more expensive Tamron lenses. I found it to be well-built and sturdy. I happened to shoot a lot of portraits in Iceland in the cold and it did well with no issues. The one thing you might come across while using this lens would be that it does tend to attract dirt and smudges after long term use. Thankfully the material that Tamron uses is easily cleanable.

Working with this lens in a harsh environment like Iceland proved that this lens is rugged and well made. To damage one would take a lot of will power (or negligence). Thankfully, this lens is dust and weather-resistant. For the price, this lens pulls out all the stops on its build.

The speed and focus seemed to be absolutely perfect when I was shooting solely on the Canon 5D Mark IV. The only issue I ran into was when I attempted to adapt this lens to the Canon EOS R. I have loved shooting with Canon’s new EOS R recently and I was looking forward to adapting this amazing lens on the camera. While I was shooting, the camera was so shooting pictures so slow that at one point the shutter got stuck and the camera froze for a few minutes. I have never had an issue with the Canon EOS R and shutter lag, but the moment I threw on this lens, it was unshootable.

Other than its issues adapted on the Canon EOS R, I ran into almost no issues with its speed and focus. The focus ring is buttery smooth and made focusing on my subjects an absolute breeze. I attempted to shoot close to my clients and the lens had no issue with focusing quickly and accurately.

I have shot with Tamron’s zoom lenses for years at weddings and have tested their lenses in the fastest moving situations. Every single time my Tamron lenses have proven to be worth their weight in money. The Tamron 35-150 f2.8-4 is no exception to this. This lens proves quite capable to shoot any sort of portraits a photographer would need.

Quite often lenses of this caliber have bokeh that is distracting with harsh tones and this lens, as you can see above, produces soft-looking bokeh that is undeniably pleasing to the eye. I have found that the idea that bokeh shouldn’t attract attention in your photos is definitely up to the opinion of the artist. I personally love a creamy, blurred background. This Tamron lens did a beautiful job with its bokeh by creating such a dreamy look.

Although some might feel that bokeh can be distracting, photographers are always looking for a lens with this type of gorgeous look and feel. Even though this lens is a Tamron SP (superior performance) model, they really put thought into this lens to the point that the bokeh looks as if it is high-end. That is definitely something to be noted when putting thought into investing in the Tamron 35-150.

For this caliber of lens and price-point, the Tamron 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Di VC OSD image quality is unmatched. Cropping into each photo I found that every image was sharper than I could have imagined.

Image quality is vital to photographers when buying a new lens, and Tamron has delivered it. The sharpness, contrast, and ability to create vivid, compressed images is seen in almost every single photo I shot with this lens. If you are a portrait photographer, I would recommend purchasing every focal length this lens offers. This lens is the whole package. Pairing the image quality and availability of every major portrait focal length, this lens is a must for a portrait photographer.

I saw little-to-no vignetting and chromatic aberration while testing this lens with the harshest of light shooting in Iceland. There also was minimal distracting flare. Shooting with flare is very important to my photography, but I was absolutely blown away by how beautiful each shot taken turned out that came without the flare you typically get on the lens while shooting directly into the sun. Tamron created aspherical elements for optimal sharpness edge-to-edge, and flare reduction in this lens and it shows in every image. The ability to shoot freely at every focal length without the worry of distracting flare and sharpness edge to edge is a huge upgrade to any zoom lens in this price range. This lens also boasts image stabilization which makes for an even more guaranteed sharp image.

As stated previously, the Tamron 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Di VC OSD portrait zoom lens is unmatched at this price point. The ability to have every great portrait focal length in one lens with a variable aperture that boasts with a maximum of f2.8 is truly mind-blowing! I believe Tamron has really given an all-around incredible lens that offers more than just versatility of focal length, but also the excellent image quality and impeccable design. The 35-150mm has the ability to be useful to both full-frame and APSC camera bodies. Although I had trouble adapting this lens to the EOS R, I found that it worked wonderfully on the Canon and Nikon DSLR’s with the speed and stability of native glass (it also worked well with the Nikon Z system). This is an incredible feat for this kind of zoom lens, and I am blown away that such amazing quality can be created at such a low price.

From the stunning bokeh to the incredible image quality, this lens has become a top contender for my favorite zoom lens produced in the last few years. You can’t match the build, quality and overall remarkable options of focal lengths this lens has to offer. The Tamron 35-150 should be a staple in any portrait photographers kit.
