Sony is a multinational conglomerate based in Japan and a household name known the world over for its diverse array of consumer electronics offerings and product innovations. Sony was founded in Tokyo after the end of World War II, and its transistor radios in the 1950s became the first of the company's many global successes. Today, Sony's digital cameras rank consistently among the top-selling digital cameras.
In 1981, Sony released the Mavica electronic still camera, an early analog forerunner to the digital camera. Fifteen years later, the company would launch the Cyber-shot DSC-F1, its first digital camera. The DSC-F1 featured 2 megapixels of resolution, a 2.5x digital zoom, and a 1.8" display. DSC stands for "Digital Still Camera" and continues to be used as a prefix for all Cyber-shot model names.
The Cyber-shot product line currently consists of five series. The H-series represents Sony's line of bridge digital cameras, sporting long zooms and Carl Zeiss optics. W-series models are advanced compacts, while the new G-series promises innovative features like Wi-Fi and in-camera web browsing. T-series cameras are Sony's lineup of sleek and stylish models with distinctive slide-down lens covers. S-series cameras are the all-purpose, entry-class models. Sony digital SLR cameras fall under the separate Sony Alpha product line and deliver powerful resolutions and features like Live View and high-speed shooting.
