Sigma DP3 Merrill Preview

Sigma, mostly known for their universal lenses, has released a new fixed lens camera, the DP3 Merrill. You might want to sit down for this, but the DP3 features a colossal 46-megapixel Foveon X3 image sensor. Yeah, that's not a typo. 46 megapixels, which according to Sigma's press release, is good for 45MB files per picture. Wow!

The DP3's huge image sensor is mated to a 50mm F2.8 fixed lens (75mm in 35mm camera terms) enhanced for marco photography. The camera's Dual TRUE II image processing engine allows the camera to recording 7 RAW images per sequence at a rate of 4 frames per second. Another nice feature is the multiple Auto Focus modes (there are six), sure to help you capture precise images in any situation.

But there is one oddity. Despite the camera's huge resolution, ability to record RAW+JPEG, and other high-end features like a hot shoe, the DP3 does not record HD video. There is a movie mode, but the maximum resolution is a paltry 640x480. Perhaps that won't matter to you; this is a still camera after all, and it's nice to see a camera focusing on what it's supposed to do.
