Features & Controls

The SL 420 is equipped with a Samsung 5x optical zoom lens, which covers a focal range of f = 6.3 ~ 31.5mm (35 - 175mm, 35mm equivalent) and has a maximum aperture range of f/3.5 - f/5.5. When the camera is powered down, the lens retracts into the body and is protected by a built-in lens cover.

Focus is achieved by a TTL face detection AF system, that features a low-light focus assist illuminator. The Autofocus Range is:

Normal: 2.6 ft. (80cm) to infinity at wide angle
    Macro: 4.0 in. - 2.6 ft. (10cm - 80cm) wide, 1.6 - 2.6 ft. (50cm - 80cm) telephoto

The built-in flash has modes for Auto, Auto & Red-eye reduction, Fill-in flash, Slow sync, Flash off, and Red-eye fix. Working range in wide angle is approx. 7.8 in. to 11.8 ft. (0.2 to 3.6m), telephoto is 1.6 ft. to 6.6 ft. (0.5 to 2.3m), using ISO Auto. Recharge time is approx. 4 seconds with fully charged battery.

Controls on the back: At the top is the cameras zoom paddle. Pushing up zooms in on the subject of your photo in both record and playback mode. Pushing down zooms out in record mode and accesses the index in playback mode. Under that is the scene selection dial. To the lower left is the menu button which sits atop the 4-way selector control. The 4-way selector controller is for navigating menu options, press the OK button in the center to accept a selection. Press "Right" to activate the Self-timer, press "Down" to enable Macro mode, press "Left" to change flash modes and press "Up" controls the amount of information displayed on the LCD screen.Along the bottom are the playback button (enters review mode), and the delete/Fn button.

The only controls on the top of the SL 420 are the power button and the shutter release. Also the ports for the speaker and microphone are located here.

The combination I/O port is located on the right hand side of the camera above the wrist strap mount. The miniature connector is for the USB 2.0 (full-speed) data cable, Audio/Video cable for connection to a TV set, and is used for charging the battery. This means you can plug the camera into any powered USB port on your PC/Mac to charge the camera. Samsung also includes an AC adapter that allows you to plug the camera into an AC outlet for charging.

The SL 420 stores images, movies and sound clips on either the ~9MB of internal memory or MMC cards up to 2GB, SD cards up to 4GB, and SDHC cards up to 8GB.

Approx. 1GB Storage Capacity

The SL 420 is powered by a SLB-10A 3.7V 1050mAh Li-ion rechargeable battery pack. This Li-ion battery pack is charged while inside the camera, and Samsung has taken a creative approach to the AC charger. The USB cable is also the charger cable - you just plug it into the small AC adapter included in the box or plug it into your PC to transfer your photos and recharge at the same time (note: charging from the PC takes about twice as long as using the AC adapter).
