Pentax is among most well-known camera brands in the world. Tens of millions of Pentax cameras and lenses have been sold since they first appeared on the scene in the 1950s. The Pentax brand has its origins in the Asahi Optical Joint Stock Company, which was founded outside Tokyo, Japan in 1919. In the decades that followed their introduction, Pentax film cameras and lenses became a staple of many an amateur and professional photographer's gear arsenal.
Pentax entered the digital age with the release of the EI-C90 in 1997. The EI-C90 was unique because it could be separated into two sections, one for the camera and one for the LCD. Four years later, Pentax introduced the Optio 430, which was the smallest compact digicam at the time, and the company continues to use the Optio name for their innovative line of point-and-shoot digital cameras.
Three series currently form the lineup of Pentax Optio cameras. P Series cameras are Pentax's popular line of slim, stylish, but powerful compacts. E Series cameras are entry-class, user-friendly models. W Series cameras feature rugged, waterproof shells designed to withstand the elements. Pentax also produces an affordable line of digital SLR cameras under the K Series name.
