Panasonic LUMIX DMC-SZ5 Review

Review posted 11/09/2012

Quick Take
  • Slim body
  • Optical image stabilization
  • 25mm wide-angle Leica lens
  • WiFi uploading and smart phone integration
  • Upload to social networks via WiFi
  • HD video (1280x720) recorded in MP4
  • Overall image quality is sub par
  • Photos taken in low light w/o flash look noisy and blurry
  • Zoom is a modest 10X
  • No thumb wheel to ease navigation
  • No creative filters
  • Battery life could be better
Bottom Line
This point-and-shoot is basic in almost every aspect except its WiFi features. Image quality is disappointing, features are few, and low-light shooting capability is minimal. But if sharing and smart phone integration is a must-have, and your budget is small, the SZ5 is an obvious choice.Read more in our full conclusion.
Smartphones may be overtaking point-and-shoot digital cameras, in terms of the sheer volume of photos uploaded to popular social networking sites like Flickr and Facebook, but Panasonic has a new camera that brings the ease of WiFi to the improved image quality of a standalone digital camera; image quality no phone has yet to match.

Meet the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-SZ5.

This WiFi-enabled camera gives users access to LUMIX CLUB cloud storage (so you never lose a memory) as well as the LUMIX Image Uploader. You can also set it to back up full resolution photos, and videos, to PCs and Smartphones on your home's wireless network, or playback photos and videos on DNLA-certified Panasonic HDTVs. Most importantly, you're only a few buttons away from instantly sharing your lives on Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, Twitter, or YouTube.

But the SZ5 is much more than a WiFi-enabled device. It's also a feature filled digicam with a 14.1-megapixel CCD sensor, Panasonic's Venus Engine Image Processor, and 720p resolution HD Video Recording. There are also Special Effects to play with, MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization), Face Detection (for perfect focus), and Auto Retouch (when you need a little help).
