Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF7 Preview

Panasonic has announced a new GF-series Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM) Camera. The Lumix DMC-GF7 combines DSLR-spec performance with modern conveniences such as Wi-Fi and selfie optimization.

Say that again?

Yeah, the GF7 not only boasts a high resolution 3.0-inch tilting touchscreen display, but there's also a Self Shot Mode with Face or Buddy Shutter activation. Wi-Fi connects the camera to any compatible iOS or Android device running the Panasonic Image App. This app, which does not require a password, allows users to back up and share images, or use your smartphone or tablet to remotely control the GF7.

In addition to the modern conveniences, the GF7 promises to be a fast, high resolution mirrorless camera that performs well in lower lighting scenarios. The 16-megapixel Live-MOS image sensor and Venus Engine image processor make for a speedy paring, with a focus on noise free images precisely focused. Multi-process NR (Noise Reduction) "works in two separate steps allowing even finer control over noise level." ISO 100-25,600 keeps you shooting even in the darkest scenarios. High Speed Burst shooting captures stills at up to 5.8 frames-per-second at full resolution, or up to 40fps at a lower resolution. Light Speed AF (Auto Focus) is a Contrast AF system that works works by exchanging signals between lens and camera at up to 240fps. AF Functions include Face/Eye Detection AF, Low Light AF, Pinpoint AF and One-shot AF.

Full 1080p HD Video recording is standard these days, but the GF7 offers numerous options here too, including multiple frame rates (24p or 60p) and recording formats (AVCHD or MP4). Full Time AF keeps moving subjects in focus, while Touch Focus allows you to rack focus mid-shot. Stereo Audio records in the Dolby Digital format, while Wind Cut reduces unwanted microphone noise. There's even a new video option called Snap Move Mode, which captures "moving photos" in periods of 2, 4, 6, or 8 seconds while allowing you to rack focus or add in scene effects that alter colors.

The GF7 also boasts a number of fun modes aimed at beginners and casual photographers. Jump Snap automatically takes a picture when the subject is in the middle of a jump. Intelligent Auto (iA) mode automatically adjusts settings for all sorts of shooting conditions. Scene Guide offers up some helpful tips for framing and settings. And often used modes, such as Portrait, Child, or Scenery, have shortcuts on the dial.
