Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ47 Preview

Panasonic added a new model to its LUMIX family today as a part of their super-zoom FZ-series. Replacing the FZ40, the LUMIX DMC-FZ47 features a 12.1 Megapixel Hi Speed CCD image sensor routed through a 24x optical zoom LIECA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens. In 35mm equivalency, that's good for a pretty-wide 25mm all the way up to a far-reaching 600mm. The lens itself has been constructed using Panasonic's Nano Surface Coating technology, which purports to minimize "ghosting" and "flare" light reflections.

Tech upgrades to the FZ47 over previous FZ models include faster auto focus speeds, 3D photo shooting, and "full HD" video recording. While the 1920x1080 resolution might technically be "full HD", the video is actually recorded in 1080i (i for interlaced) in the AVCHD format, which for many isn't actually considered full HD. The FZ47 also incorporates Dolby Digital Stereo Creator technology during video capture for the highest quality stereo sound possible. Thanks to the new auto focus system, Panasonic Sonic Speed AF, the FZ47 starts up 35 percent faster than the FZ40 and is able to quickly respond to fast-moving imagery and situations. As such, you'll probably enjoy its ability to take full resolution (12.1 Megapixel) shots in bursts up to 3.7 frames per second (or up to 10 frames per second if you're okay with dropping your resolution down to 3 Megapixels).

No modern digicam is complete without a plethora of artistic and automatic functionality. The LUMIX DMC-FZ47 is no different, featuring artistic effects modes for popular camera effects like Miniature, which allows users to do in-camera Tilt Shift photography. A full list of artistic modes is included below. For those who would rather let the camera to all the measuring and adjusting, the FZ47 comes with iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode, which chooses the best settings over a range of features like: POWER O.I.S (Optical Image Stabilizer), Motion Deblur, Face Recognition, Face Detection, AF Tracking, Intelligent ISO control, and Intelligent Scene Selector. Lastly, because everything in the world must include social networking, the FZ47 features a built-in YouTube and Facebook Image Uploader -- simply connect the camera to your computer and follow the automatic prompts to share your images or videos without having to use any software.
