Playback Screens & Menus

Please excuse the poor quality of these screen captures. The SZ-15 kit does not include an AV output cable, therefore we had to photograph the display screen.

You can see the photos you've already shot by pressing the Playback button on the back of the SZ-15. In Playback mode you'll use the four-way button to scroll through the images.

As with most Olympus cameras, you can change the type of data displayed with each image. Press the Info button (upper portion of the four-way button) to change the display.

The primary playback screen shows the date and time the image was shot in the lower right corner and the file number in the upper right corner. When you press the Info button, you'll see the image shrink to occupy the left half of the screen. The SZ-15 adds data about the image to the right side of the screen, including the shooting mode that was used, shutter speed, aperture, EV, image quality, ISO, white balance, resolution, and file name. Unfortunately the SZ-15 doesn't display a histogram in this advanced view, which would be helpful in determining whether portions of the image are not exposed properly.

If you press Info again the image will return to the full screen view and all data is removed from the screen.

Olympus offers a thumbnail view with the SZ-15's Playback mode, allowing you to see multiple thumbnail images on the screen at one time and making it easier to select the desired image more quickly than scrolling through them one by one. With a single image displayed on the screen, press the zoom switch to the left to enter thumbnail view mode.

However the SZ-15's thumbnail mode is limited, as your only option is a 4x5 grid of thumbnails. Most cameras offer multiple grids, such as a 2x3 or 10x10.

To scroll through the thumbnails, use the four-way switch. With a thumbnail highlighted, press the OK button to bring that image to a full screen view. Or to exit thumbnail mode, press the zoom ring to the right.

With a single image displayed on the screen, you can magnify the image, which will allow you to check its sharpness. Press the SZ-15's zoom ring to the right to begin magnifying the image.

Ten different magnification levels are available. In the upper right corner you'll see a thumbnail view of the full image inside the black box and the current view within the full image indicated by the white box. Use the four-way button to change the current view versus the full image.

Reduce the magnification by pressing the zoom ring to the left.

Playback - playback menu.jpg
If you're expecting a lot of editing options with the Olympus SZ-15's Playback mode, you'll need to dial down your expectations just a bit. With the SZ-15 designed as a fun consumer-level camera, it would have been nice if Olympus had chosen to include the ability to add the Magic Filter editing options to any image you had already shot. Instead you're limited to cropping, resizing, and a few other basic editing options.

To open the Playback menu, just press the Menu button while in Playback mode. The Playback menu options include:

  • Slideshow - BGM (On, Off), Type (Normal, Fader, Zoom), Start
  • Edit - Shrink (VGA, QVGA), Crop, Attach Audio Clip, Beauty Fix, Shadow Adj, Redeye Fix, Rotate
  • Erase - All Erase, Sel. Image, Erase
  • Print Order - One, All
  • Protect
  • Upload Order

From Playback mode you can view a limited amount of information about the movies you've shot. On the SZ-15's main movie mode you'll see the Movie Play icon in the lower left corner, the date and time of the recording in the lower right corner, and the file name in the upper right corner.

Press the Info button to see more detailed data about the movie. The movie image will shrink into the left side of the screen and data about the movie will appear on the right side of the screen, including the EV, resolution, frame rate, white balance, and file number. Press Info again to remove all data from the screen, other than the Movie Play icon.

Press OK to begin playing the movie. Press OK a second time to pause the movie.
