Playback Screens & Menus

[NOTE: Please excuse the poor quality of these screen captures. The Olympus PEN E-PL8 kit does not include an AV output cable, therefore we had to photograph the LCD for most of the playback screens.]

Playback - photo GIF.gif

Press the Playback button in the bottom right corner on the back of the PEN PL8. You'll then see all of the images stored on the memory card.

Once you're in Playback mode, you can change the data shown on the screen for each stored photo by pressing the Info button on the back of the Olympus E-PL8. The display options are:

  • No data
  • Limited data, including file number, resolution, and aspect ratio
  • Extensive data, including four histograms, pixel size, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, EV, shooting mode, white balance, and focal length

Playback - edit GIF.gif
Olympus included a few different in-camera editing options with this model. With a stored photo displayed, just press the OK button to see the popup menu on the screen for editing. The editing options are:

  • JPEG Edit - Shadow Adj, Redeye Fix, Crop, Aspect, Black & White, Sepia, Saturation, Resize, e-Portrait
  • Add to My Clips
  • Share Order
  • Lock
  • Audio Recording - No, Start, Erase
  • Rotate
  • Slideshow - Start, BGM (Happy Days, Off), Slide (All, Still Picture, Movie), Slide Interval (between 2 and 10 seconds), Movie Interval (Short, Full)
  • Print
  • Erase
If you're attempting to edit a RAW photo, you'll see one more entry in the popup menu at the top: RAW Data Edit.

Playback - grid GIF.gif
When you press the Fn button on the back of the camera in Playback mode, you'll see a 5x5 grid of thumbnails of your photos. You can use the four-way button followed by the OK button to select a particular thumbnail and bring it to full screen view.

Or press the magnifying glass icon button on the back of the camera to move out of thumbnail grid view.

A 5x5 grid is the camera's default view. You can change the grid settings through the Custom menu (discussed on the previous page).

Playback - zoom GIF.gif
If you want to check the sharpness of a photo after shooting it, you can zoom into the image on the Olympus camera's screen. With a single image on the screen, press the magnifying glass icon button on the back of the camera to zoom. The zoom options are: 2x, 3x, 5x, 7x, 10x, and 14x. You can reduce the zoom by pressing the Fn button.

In zoom mode, the entire photo is represented by the black outlined box in the lower right corner of the screen. The current view is represented by the white outlined box. Change the current view by using the four-way button.

Playback - movie GIF.gif

With a movie displayed on the PL8's screen, you can replay it. Just press the OK button twice to play the movie. Press OK during playback to pause the movie.

As with still images, you can change the data displayed on the screen about the movie. Press the Info button to change the displayed data. You'll toggle between a screen with no data and a screen with the file name, art settings, white balance setting, and movie resolution.

To see the Playback menu on the PEN E-PL8, press the Menu button. Then scroll down the left side of the screen until you highlight the Playback icon (third from the top). The Playback menu options are:

  • Slideshow - Start, BGM (Happy Days, Off), Slide (All, Still Picture, Movie), Slide Interval (between 2 and 10 seconds), Movie Interval (Short, Full)
  • Automatic Rotate - Off, On
  • Edit - Select Image, Image Overlay
  • Print Order
  • Reset Protect - Yes, No
  • Connection to Smartphone

As you can see, this is a limited number of options. Look through the Custom menu (discussed on the previous screen) to see some additional options for Playback mode. And don't forget about the photo editing popup menu we discussed earlier.
