Olympus, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, is a global manufacturer of imaging products for consumers and industries.Though founded in 1919 as a business specializing in microscopes and thermometers, Olympus is probably best known for its cameras and lenses. Olympus produced its first camera back in 1936 and later won acclaim for its groundbreaking PEN half-frame cameras in the 1960s. With its development of the all-new Micro Four Thirds standard, Olympus continues to be at the forefront of new camera technology.
Olympus was an early entrant to the digital camera market. In 1996, the company rolled out its first consumer digital camera, the compact Camedia C-800L, to great fanfare. The C-800L was followed a year later by the C-1400L, the first digital SLR produced by Olympus. The C-1400L featured a fixed optical 3x zoom lens and 1.41 megapixel resolution. It also went on to become one of the early successes of the digital camera era.
Currently, Olympus digital cameras are spread across five different product lines. The Olympus E-Series features their lightweight DSLR models, which use the Four Thirds and now the Micro Four Thirds systems. The SP-Series covers their lineup of bridge cameras. Waterproof and shockproof cameras can be found in the Stylus Tough Series, while sleek compacts form the Stylus Series. Lastly, FE-Series models are targeted at price-conscious consumers.
