Playback Screens & Menus

Playback - image GIF.gif
When you're ready to see the images you've shot with the Nikon 1 J5, press the Playback button on the back of the camera. You'll see the most recent image or movie recorded.

To change the data displayed with the single image, you'll have to work through the camera's menu structure, which is more time consuming than just pressing an Info or Display button, as many cameras offer.

Press the Menu button and highlight or touch the wrench icon on the left side of the screen for the Setup menu. Then press or highlight the Display menu entry. Scroll down to the Playback entry and press OK or touch Playback. You then can select from three display options:

  • Basic Info - Shows time and date photo was recorded, file name, and resolution.
  • Detailed Info - Adding to the data shown in Basic Info mode, this mode shows a histogram in the upper right corner, a scaled-down view of the image in the upper left corner, and information including the shooting mode, shutter speed, aperture setting, ISO setting, lens focal length, EV setting, and white balance setting.
  • Image only - No data is shown on the screen.

To scroll through the photos stored on the memory card, press the left and right edges of the four-way button, spin the four-way button command dial, or swipe your finger across the touch screen LCD, just as you would with a tablet or smartphone.

Playback - grid GIF.gif
If you want to scroll through multiple stored photos at once, use the grid format in the J5's Playback mode. With a single image shown on the screen, spin the command dial on the top panel of the camera to the left. Or use the touch screen by placing your thumb and finger on the LCD and drag them toward each other in a closed pinching motion. The camera will display thumbnail images of the stored photos in grids of 2x2, 3x3, and 4x4. If you go beyond the 4x4 grid, you'll see a calendar screen, where you can select a date on which the images were shot.

Playback - zoom GIF.gif
You'll access the Nikon 1 J5's magnification feature in Playback mode in a similar manner. With a single image on the screen spin the command dial on top of the camera to the right or use a open pinching motion on the touch screen to see a magnification of the current image. Spin the dial to the left to reduce the magnification. Press the edges of the four-way button to change your perspective or drag your finger on the touch screen.

The box in the lower right corner shows the overall image, while the yellow outlined box inside represents the current view in relation to the full image. Both boxes will disappear after 1 second of inactivity. Eight levels of magnification are available.

Playback - feature GIF.gif
To gain access to the most commonly used image editing and Playback commands, press the up button on the four-way button to open the Feature grid. Touch an icon or use the four-way button to scroll among the icons until the feature you want to use is highlighted in yellow. Press OK and you can see the options available under the feature. The options are (starting in the upper left corner and working clockwise):

You can see detailed, basic, or no data on the screen about the movie, using the same technique described above for still images.

From Playback mode or from any shooting mode, press the Menu button to access the Playback menu, which is indicated by the Playback icon at the top left of the screen.
