Nikon D810A DSLR Preview

The Nikon D810A DSLR is a D810 -- a 36.3MP image sensor mated to the EXPEED 4 image processor and housed in a magnesium alloy body -- optimized for astro-photography and scientific applications. To quote Nikon, "by modifying the infrared (IR) cut filter for the hydrogen alpha wavelength, Nikon has created a camera that gives photographers the ability to capture the diffuse nebulae in the night sky and to create colorful, breathtaking celestial images." Basically, this version of the D810 is four times more sensitive to the 656nm wavelengths, which is more adept at capturing nebulae and constellations.

In addition to the optimized IR cut filter, the D810A adds a new Long Exposure Manual Mode with shutters speeds from 4, 5, 8, 10, 15, 20, 30, 60, 120, 180, 240, 300, 600 or 900 seconds (15 minutes). There's also Bulb and Time settings. ISO range too has been optimized from 200-12,800 (Hi-2 51,200) to reduce noise.

Virtual Exposure Preview Mode can be engaged in Live View with exposures longer than 30 seconds, displaying an estimated preview of your final image. Electronic Front Curtain Shutter Mode minimizes vibrations, using the electronic shutter versus the mechanical, "to attain maximum sharpness."

While the Nikon D810A is perfect for capturing the heavens and and the stars and light that's been traveling across space for millions or billions of years, it is not recommended for general photography
