Nikon Coolpix S8200 Hands On Preview

The Nikon Coolpix S8200 is one of six brand new Coolpix series cameras debuting in September. As luck would have it, Steve's had a chance to play around with pre-release versions of all six cameras. The S8200 features a 16.1 MP CMOS backside illumination sensor, a 14x wide angle lens (with a 35mm equivalence of 23-350mm), L-VR vibration reduction, and a 3.0" inch touch screen. This isn't a replacement for a "last year's model" so to speak, but rather it's been designed to split the difference between the 10x zoom S8100 and the 18x zoom S9100.

If you're in search of dSLR-esc speed in a point-and-shoot, the S8200 is able to shoot five full resolution, continuous shots at six frames per second. There's also a pre-shooting cache that can be set to record images before releasing the shutter to capture fast action before you realize you actually want a particular shot.

Move recording enthusiasts will enjoy the ability to record 1080p HD video at 30 frames per second, 720p HD video at 30 or 60 frames per second, or use Apple's proprietary codec, 'iFrame" (960x580), which is designed to look best on iPhones, iPods, and iPads. 60 frames per second at 720p is a nice feature because it allows users to shoot and display slow motion video (10 seconds of footage filmed at 60 frames per second will playback for 20 seconds at 30 frames per second).
