Nikon Coolpix S800c Preview

Nikon's Coolpix S800c is their first WiFi-enabled compact digital camera to run on Google's Android Operating System, which is more commonly found in tablets and smart phones. Is this the future of the digicam? Let's read on to find out.

The Coolpix S800c seems to be capable of doing everything but make phone calls (though I'm sure some enterprising young minds will figure out a work around). As a camera, we've got quality features like a 10x optical zoom mated to a 16 megapixel CMOS image sensor and an EXPEED C2 image processor capable of capturing Full HD 1080p video as well as high-speed burst shooting at a speed of 8 frames-per-second (but only for up to 3 shots). A number of pre-programmed camera modes, such as macro or HDR, are included.

As an Android device, we've got built-in GPS for geo-tagging, WiFi connectivity, and access to Google Play, home to apps for gaming, video and photo editing, email, productivity, and access to photo-storing, via Nikon's My Picturetown, as well as your favorite social networking sites. Download videos to watch on your camera, then record a response in 1080p with stereo sound, and upload it directly to Vimeo or YouTube. And if you don't have a WiFi network around, the S800c will offer a dataplan where users can share images via a mobile network.

The S800c also features a stunning 3.5-inch touchscreen OLED for reviewing pictures, video, and easier web browsing.
