Record Screens & Menus

The Nikon S30 has the simplest user interface we've ever seen. There are only fully automatic modes to choose from, like Point and Shoot (aka Auto) shown above. The buttons on the left control the colored circle you see on the left of the LCD. Icons on the screen show you the battery level indicator, the zoom indicator (shows up when you zoom the lens), the number of images left or video time remaining until the memory card is full, and the image mode icon.

When you half-press the shutter release, the camera will choose the appropriate exposure settings and attempt to lock focus. If successful, the AF marks will turn Green, and the exposure settings will display at the top of the screen. If it fails, the AF marks will turn red.

Here you can see the menu options available when you press any one of the four buttons along the left hand side of the LCD. Pressing the button that coincides with the colored circle on the left will select that option.

Available Options:
  • Change colors
  • Decorate
  • Choose a style
  • Change sounds
  • Flash mode
  • Self-timer
  • Choose a size
  • Movie AF
  • Set up

When you select the Choose a style option, you now have access to ten scene modes. They include: Point and shoot, Shoot close-ups, Shoot under water, Take a series of pictures, Shoot at intervals, Photograph food, Highlight colors, Take soft pictures, Create a diorama effect, and Photograph fireworks.

Here you can see the available settings for still images: Large (10-megapixels), Medium (4-megapixels), Small (2-megapixels).

Here you can see the Change colors setting. You can adjust the brightness, vividness, and hue.

The Decorate option allows you to add decorative frames around your subjects.

Here you can see the Coolpix S30 recording video. The optical zoom can not be used while recording, however you can preset the desired focal length before recording starts.

Surprisingly, you have access to choose the Movie Autofocus mode; Single or Full-time AF.

You have two choices for Movie size, 720p HD (1280x720) or VGA (640x480). Both modes offer a fixed frame rate of 30fps.

Here we can see the Set up menu options:
  • Welcome screen
  • Date and Time
  • Brightness
  • Print date
  • Electronic VR
  • Format card
  • Language
  • Menu background
  • Video mode
  • Reset all
  • Battery type
