Kodak Playsport Zx5 Review

Review posted 7/12/2011

Quick Take

  • Nice compact body
  • Rugged waterproof and shockproof specifications
  • Very simple to use; handy to have along with you
  • Requires only one hand for use
  • Records pleasing full 1080p HD and 720p HD video
  • A/V and HDMI output
  • Fast f/2.8 fixed lens works well in low-light
  • Decent Audio
  • No optical zoom
  • Movies are a bit "choppy" with quick panning
  • Image quality of still images is more in tune with mobile phones
  • The SD card and HDMI compartments are very easy to accidentally open. Therefore, while using in the water, I was constantly checking the release switches and had to worry about these waterproofing doors opening.
  • Slow shutter. I press the shutter release, and it has nearly a second capture time. This was very frustrating in attempting to capture action shots or animals.
  • Playback was laggy. Navigating through pictures or videos was a pain due to the slow reaction time to actually view the next picture/video after pressing the next button.
Bottom Line
The Kodak Playsport Zx5 is a fun little pocket HD video camera. Video quality is good for a camera of this size, and you can capture decent 5-megapixel images when needed. With a street price of $159.99 US, the Playsport is very easy on the pocketbook. Read more in our Full Conclusion.
