Casio Exilim EX-Z450 Review

Review posted 12/1/2009

Casio has released the new compact EX-Z450. This is the predecessor to the EX-Z300 and has many of the same features but with a few new twists. One of the more amazing features is the Dynamic Photo Animations described below as well as boasting up to 550 pictures on a single fully-charged battery.

The EX-Z450 features a 4x optical zoom lens that covers a 28 to 112mm (35mm equivalent) zoom range. Users can enjoy a wide range of shooting options, from wide angle photography that is convenient when shooting large groups or objects, to telephoto shooting which brings distant subjects a bit closer.

New functions include:

  • Handheld night scene: The cameras can automatically detect night situations where there would normally be camera shake if a tripod wasn't used. Users get clear, bright photographs of both people and night scenes as the camera compensates for camera shake.
  • Dynamic Photo Animations: This innovative function allows you to add a number of different animated graphics to still pictures in the camera. These creations can be easily viewed on the monitor, printed or converted to a movie file. Additionally, the Dynamic Photo function retains its original ability to composite a moving subject and a new background as a Motion JPEG like a Hollywood green screen.
  • Intelligent AF: Intelligent AF automatically detects non-human photo subjects in the whole composition and determines the focus and exposure area. By simply pointing the camera at a desired shot, Intelligent AF ensures a focused, crisp picture without an out-of-focus subject.
  • Landscape Mode: Now you have direct access through the Make-up/Landscape button to Enhance Colors & Remove Mist.

The EX-Z450 features a Landscape Mode for capturing beautiful scenic photography. Unlike earlier landscape photography modes, which enhance the saturation of an entire hue, users can now select between the Vivid Landscape option that uses image analysis to determine and vividly enhance only the most important colors in the landscape or the Mist Removal option that makes weather-affected misty scenes look clear and bright.

Camera shake is compensated for by the mechanical movement of the imaging element in the camera. Of course, it also incorporates Anti Shake DSP, which reduces photo blur due to moving subjects by raising the camera's sensitivity and allowing faster shutter speeds.

The EX-Z450 comes equipped with a high definition movie recording function, which allows beautiful movies with an image size of 1280x720 (24fps). It will also record in Standard 640X480 (30fps) and LP 320X240 (15fps) definitions. There is also a selection in the Best Shots mode for YouTube ready video.

This model also features a high contrast 3.0-inch LCD monitor, which Casio claims produces sharp, bright images that can be viewed easily from any angle, and the monitor's high brightness means that it can be easily viewed outdoors in bight conditions.
