Casio's EXILIM EX-S1 is the smallest, thinnest and lightest (as of 7/02) digital camera in the world. The all-metal body measures only 11.3 mm thick, 88 mm wide x 55 mm high and weighing a mere 86 g, excluding the battery and memory card. The EXILIM is designed to go anywhere you go and be ready at a moment's notice to record the action unfolding around you with an incredible 0.01-second shutter lag time.

The EX-S1 has a 1.31-million pixel CCD and 1280 x 960 pixel standard image size. The optical viewfinder is supplemented by an innovative 1.6-inch color LCD supplying clear and bright pictures full of contrast. The lens has a maximum aperture of F2.5 and a fixed focal length of equivalent to a 37mm lens on a 35mm cameras. The built-in flash is activated in unfavourable lighting conditions.

The EX-S1 saves images to its 12MB of internal memory. Secure Digital or MultiMedia Cards can be used as additional storage. Images may be copied to/from internal memory and to/from the flash cards. The USB docking station has dual functionality as a link for transferring image data to a PC, and acts as a charger for the included lithium ion battery.

Casio Exilim EX-M1

Its sister model, the EXILIM EX-M1 is equipped with an integrated MP3-player, a movie player (with sound) and recording function. Only 1.1 mm thicker, this model has a total depth of 12.4 mm, and all other dimensions remain the same.

The silver finish of the all-metal camera emphasizes its high quality. The small, flat, miniature design offers a range of convenient operating functions. The EXILIM EX-M1, with MP3 function, permits short movie recording with sound, as well as individual pictures, pictures using the self-timer feature and individual pictures with sound. It also has a Best-Shot feature, already used in other Casio cameras.

The EXILIM Technology

  • One-Unit-Module of Lens and CCD
The technology of integrating spherical lenses and a high-sensitivity CCD into a single component, developed by CASIO, contributes tremendously to the thinness of the EXILIM.
  • High-sensitivity CCD
A new 1/2.7-inch progressive CCD, which is larger than the current mainstream 1/3.2-inch CCD, allows the largest cell size 4.1 micron pitch in this class, resulting in an extremely high sensitivity CCD. This CCD reduces blurring due to hand and subject movement, and makes it possible to take pictures without flash in low lighting.
  • Multi Chip Module (MCM)
Casio's newly developed CPU, ASIC, SDRAM and Flash memory make it possible to reduce power consumption and noise by 1/3. In addition, by incorporating these 4 chips into a multi module chip, the chip size is greatly reduced by 70%, in comparison with our current digital cameras.
  • Digital Interface TFT LCD
The world's first digital interface TFT LCD for a digital camera was specially designed by Casio for the EXILIM. The digital interface eliminates the need for a converter, which cuts required space by 10% (as compared to the TFT LCD technology applied to our current digital cameras) and greatly reduces the number of required components.

Casio's Exilim Card Camera Wins PC Magazine's 'Best of Show' Award In the Personal Technology Category

Product honored for its sleek, trend setting design and functionality

DOVER, N.J., July 11 -- Casio, Inc., manufacturer of the first consumer digital camera with an LCD screen, was awarded the "Best of Show" in the Personal Technology category for the EXILIM Card Camera. The award was given by PC Magazine, the largest technology publication in the world, at the PC XPO show in New York City.

Each year, PC Magazine honors a select group of products for their innovation, creativity of design and new ideas. This year, EXILIM was recognized for its portable, compact design, ease of use and ability to take terrific photos. EXILIM attracted considerable attention at Casio's booth at PC Expo, as well as earlier this year when it debuted at the CeBit show in Germany. In conjunction with these shows, EXILIM has also garnered coverage in broadcast and print media including CBS-TV, CNN, New York One, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, The New York Times and the New York Daily News, among others.

"Casio is especially pleased to receive this honor from such an esteemed source as PC Magazine. Our goal is to deliver stylish, simple to use, lifestyle oriented technology products, and we think we have truly achieved this with EXILIM. We're truly excited that EXILIM has had such a wonderful reception at this early stage," said Gary Schultz, director of marketing, Casio, Inc. "We consider the award a great compliment."

Among the smallest fully functional digital cameras on the market and sized for fashion and portability, both cameras in the EXILIM line, EX-S1 and EX-M1, measure less than 1/2" thick, 3.46" wide and 2.16" high and weigh just a fraction over 3 ounces. Both are crafted in all metal and feature a high quality silver finish.

The cameras feature a 1.6" LCD and 1280 x 960 dpi image size. 12 MB of internal memory allows storage of up to a 30 second AVI movie and SD/ MMC cards can be purchased separately for additional storage. Included accessories are a lithium ion battery, strap and a USB docking station.

The EX-M1 boasts the additional capabilities of integrated MP3, voice recorder, short movie pictures with sound, pictures using the self-timer feature and individual pictures with sound. The EX-S1 retails at the suggested price of $299 and the EX-M1 has a suggested retail price tag of $349. Both cameras are currently available.
