Shown here is the built-in flash that pops up anytime the camera is powered on. The SX230 HS has a range of up to 11.5 ft. (W) or 6.6 ft. (T). Flash options include: Auto, Manual (3 levels), Red-eye Reduction, Auto Red-eye Correction, Flash On, Flash Off; FE Lock, Safety FE, and Slow Synchro.
The only controls on the top of the SX230 are the shutter release and the zoom control toggle that is wrapped around it. You'll also notice the the top of the flash when closed, along with the the built-in speaker and GPS unit.
Framing and viewing your images is accomplished on the 3-inch wide screen LCD with approx. 461,000 pixels. This unit offers 100% frame coverage, and automatic brightness adjustment. You can also manually adjust the brightness via the setup menu.
Controls on the back of the SX230 are all on the right hand side starting with the On/Off button at the top. Next you will see the Mode dial, that is used to select which
shooting mode you would like to use. Underneath the Mode dial is the red Movie Record button that starts and stops video recording, and the blue Playback button that sends the camera into Playback mode. Next is the 4-way control dial which surrounds the FUNC/SET button. This is used to navigate through all camera menus and the set button will select any desired options. This is also used as a shortcut dial when in record mode. Up will access the exposure compensation, down is the self-timer, left is the focus mode, and right will access the flash settings; depending on the exposure mode being used. On the bottom
are the DISP button and the MENU button. The Display button will change the amount of information shown on the LCD in any mode and the menu button will grant you access to all menus that correspond to what mode the camera is in.
The SX230 is equipped with a standard AV port (top) for displaying SD (Standard Definition) video on a TV set with the supplied cables, as well as USB connection to a Mac or PC, and direct printing with compatible printers. It also has an HDMI port (bottom) which will stream HD video to any television with HDMI set up.
The SX230 HS accepts SD/SDHC/SDXC, MultiMediaCard, MMC Plus, and HC MMC Plus type memory cards. Canon also notes this camera is Eye-Fi compliant. The camera is shown above with a SanDisk Extreme, 30MB/s, 4GB SDHC memory card.

The SX230 HS is powered by Canon's NB-5L battery pack. Canon claims you should be able to snap 210 images or get about 4 hours of playback time. The battery is charged out of camera with the included CB-2LX battery charger, which features fold-away prongs, and has no cords for convenient storage. The battery will charge fully in approximately 2hrs. 5mins.
