Bottom Line
Don't let the high price tag on the PowerShot G16 cause you to skip past this camera, even if you own the G15 already. The upgrade of the image processor inside the G16 gives it noticeably stronger performance speed and image quality versus its predecessor. The G16 is a little chunky and its small 5x optical zoom lens will disappoint some photographers, but this camera's performance speeds and image quality both are outstanding, as long as it fits in your budget. The Canon PowerShot G16 is the first G-series PowerShot camera to include built-in Wi-Fi, which allows the G16 to share photos and videos to Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, YouTube, and even via email. How? There are actually a three ways to use the Wi-Fi:

  1. Connect the G16 to a PC over a local Wi-Fi network.
  2. Connect the G16 to the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY online photo album.
  3. Connect the G16 to a smartphone or tablet running the Canon CameraWindow app (available for iOS and Android). This app also allows users to control the G16 remotely

Looking at the PowerShot G16's core features we see a 12.1-megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS image sensor, a DIGIC 6 image processor, a 5x optical zoom (28-140mm) lens with an f/1.8 - f/2.8 maximum aperture range, improved Auto Focus times, reduced shooting lag, continuous shooting speeds of up to 9.3 frames-per-second, and Full HD 1080/60p video recording.

With an f1.8 aperture, High Sensitivity image sensor, and the DIGIC 6 processor, the G16 should be quite good in lower lighting conditions. To take advantage of this, Canon has developed three new Star Modes:

  1. Star Nightscape, which captures a single landscape image of a starry night sky
  2. Star Trails, which captures multiple images of star trails and combines them into a single "luminous still image"
  3. Star Time Lapse Movie, which takes multiple still images over a long period of time, creating a movie with the stars moving across the sky.

The G16 might be a point-and-shoot digicam, but it has the look and feel and dials of Canon's more expensive EOS DSLR cameras. It even has HDR Scene Modes such as Natural, Art Bold, Art Embossed, Art Standard and Art Vivid options. HDR Photography combines multiple exposures for more saturated colors and enhanced details in light and dark exposures.
