Playback Features

Playback Menu

  • Protect Images: Protect (or unprotect) images from being deleted. Note that it does not prevent them from being erased if the card is formatted.

  • Rotate: Rotate image 90° or 270° clockwise.

  • Erase All on Card: Deletes all images on the memory card except for those that have been Protected.

  • Print Order: Specify images to be printed.

  • Highlight Alert: When this feature is turned on, potentially over-exposed areas of the image will blink.

  • Display AF Points: During image playback the AF points used at the time of exposure will be overlayed on the image.

  • Histogram display: Brightness or RGB channels

To review captured images you press the DISPLAY button, this puts the camera into playback mode. To chose the desired playback format you hold the DISPLAY button in and rotate the Quick Control dial.

When selecting a playback mode, this menu bar will appear across the top of the color LCD. The playback modes are: Shooting Info, Single image, Four-Image Index, Nine-Image Index and Folders.

The Shooting Info mode displays a small thumbnail of the picture and a histogram, and also indicates: shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation, image protection, sound recording, image quality, memory card, AF point, shooting mode, metering mode, flash compensation, ISO speed, white balance, image verification data appended, color temperature, WB bracketing amount, WB correction, date, time and file number.

The histogram can be configured to display Brightness or the RGB data.

The Single image screen shows the picture full screen with the shutter speed, aperture, protected image (key icon), voice note attached (musical note icon), image quality (or RAW+L for simultaneous RAW and JPEG capture) and source memory card (1=CF, 2=SD) above the image. If the Highlight Alert option is enabled any portion of the image that is over-exposed or potentially over-exposed will blink.

If the Auto Rotate option was enabled when you captured the picture it will be displayed like this on playback. You can manually rotate portrait mode images via the playback menu when needed.

The Single image can be enlarged from 1.5X up to 10X for inspection of focus, color or composition. You can scroll around the magnified image at any step. RAW images are displayed unsharpened. If you want to field-check focus when shooting RAW images, record RAW + Small JPEG with a high value for sharpness; the camera will display the sharpened JPEG in playback mode.

There are two Index modes available, the first one displays four thumbnails per screen. You can quickly find and select an image to be displayed full screen. In the upper left corner is the playback mode menu, shown here because the DISPLAY button is being held depressed.

The second Index screen displays 9 thumbnails per screen.

The last option is the Create Folder screen. A new folder can be created on the CF (left side) or SD (right side) card.

While viewing an image you can record a voice annotation (or add any sound) by pressing and holding the Protect/Sound Record button down for 2 seconds. You can record up to 30 seconds, stop recording by releasing the button.
