The Z1012 IS features a SCHNEIDER-KREUZNACH VARIOGON 12x optical zoom lens with a 35mm equivalent focal range of 33 - 396mm. This is a speedy lens, with a wide open aperture of f/2.8 wide and f/4.8 telephoto. The zoom coverage is further extended by a 5x Advanced Digital Zoom, making for a combined 60x total zoom. When the camera is powered down, the lens retracts inside the body and is protected by an external lens cover.

The TTL autofocus system has modes for normal AF, macro AF, infinity AF, and manual as well as selectable continuous AF, single AF, TTL multi-zone AF (5 zones), and center zone AF.

AF range:

    Normal wide: 12cm. to infinity
    Normal tele: 60cm. to infinity

The built-in flash has modes for auto, fill, red-eye and forced off. The working flash range in wide is 7.6m and in telephoto is 4.4m.

The 2.5-inch color LCD is used for framing, preview, review and menu operations. The refresh rate when used as a live viewfinder is realtime 30fps. This is an indoor/outdoor type display with very good color and contrast. The display automatically turns off after one minute if no buttons are pushed. Press any button to turn it on again.

Controls on the back: Upper right corner are the zoom controls, which also act as the index and magnify options in review mode. The Monitor/"i" button controls the amount of information that is overlayed on the LCD image. Under that is the Play button. The 4-way controller lets you navigate the onscreen menus, pressing the OK button in the center will accept changes. The "Up", "Down", "Left" and "Right" buttons are used to change between the values for ISO, Focus, Exposure compensation, etc. At the bottom you can see the Menu button (calls up and dismisses the menus), Review button, and the Share button (lets you select images for printing, e-mailing, or to mark as a favorite) and the Delete button.

On top you'll find various controls. Top right is the shutter release followed by three buttons that control the Flash, Focus modes and the Drive modes. To the left of these buttons you will find the power switch and the mode dial.

The Mode Dial has positions for: Auto, Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Manual, Movie, Digital Panorama, Scene, High ISO and Sport.

I/O ports are located on the right side. The USB 2.0 port works with the Kodak EasyShare Software to make image downloading fast and easy even without the use of an optional EasyShare Camera or Printer Dock. The USB cable can also be plugged into any Pictbridge compatible photo printer for direct, computer-less printing. This port also facilitates the A-V output cable with selectable NTSC or PAL format and audio for connection to a TV set (cable not included).

There's also the DC IN jack for an optional AC power adapter. Not shown is the docking connector on the bottom of the camera.

The Z1012 IS Zoom comes with 32MB of internal memory and is equipped with a SD/SDHC/MMC card slot that accepts any capacity SD/SDHC flash card.

Power is supplied by either the included CRV3 battery pack or two AA sized lithium batteries.
