Samsung L830 Review
Features & Controls
The L830 is equipped with a Samsung 3x internal optical zoom lens, which covers a focal range of f =6.3 ~ 18.9mm (38 - 114mm, 35mm equivalent) and has a maximum aperture range of f/3.0 - f/5.6. When the camera is powered down, the lens retracts into the body and is protected by a built-in lens cover. At the very bottom, you can also see the built-in microphone.
Focus is achieved by a TTL contrast detection AF system, however it does not feature a low-light focus assist illuminator. The Autofocus Range is:
Macro: 10cm to 80cm (Wide), 50cm to 80cm (Tele)
Auto Mode: 10 cm to Infinity (Wide), 50cm to Infinity (Tele)
The built-in flash has modes for Auto, Auto & Red-eye reduction, Fill-in flash, Slow sync, Flash off, and
Red-eye fix. Working range in wide angle is approx. 7.8 in. to 15.1 ft. (0.2 to 4.6m), telephoto is 1.6 ft.
to 8.5 ft. (0.5 to 2.6m), using ISO Auto. Recharge time is approx. 4 seconds with fully charged battery.
Here you can see the high-resolution (230,000 PIXEL) 2.5-inch color LCD monitor, which takes up a large portion of the back of the camera. The various controls are illustrated below.
Controls on the back: At the top are the zoom controls, which also function as the image Index and Magnify buttons in play mode. Next is the "E"ffects button, which allows you to use creative effects on your images in record mode, and calls up the edit menu in playback mode. The Fn or Function button calls up this shortcut menu that allows you to adjust image/movie resolution, quality, metering, drive mode, ISO, white balance and exposure compensation. In playback mode it also acts as the image delete button. The 4-way selector controller is for navigating menu options, press the MENU/OK button in the center to call up the menu and accept a selection. Press "Right" to activate the Self-timer, press "Down" to enable Macro mode (Play/Pause button in playback), press "Left" to change flash modes and press "Up" controls the amount of information displayed on the LCD screen.
Along the bottom are the playback button (enters review mode), and the
Face Detection (AF/AE) button, which enables or disables this feature.
On top you'll find the power On/Off switch, shutter release, built-in microphone, and the Mode dial with
positions for: Manual, ASR, Program, Auto, Movie, Night, Portrait, and Scene.
The combination I/O port is located on the bottom of the camera. The miniature connector is for both the
USB 2.0 (full-speed) data cable and the Audio/Video cable for connection to a TV set.
The L830 stores images, movies and sound clips on either the 10MB of internal memory or a SD/MMC/MMCPlus
cards up to 2GB, and SDHC cards up to 4GB.
Approx. 256MB Storage Capacity
The L830 is powered by a tiny SLB-0937 3.7V 900mAh Li-ion rechargeable battery pack that Samsung claims is good for up to 200 shots. This Li-ion battery pack is charged while inside the camera. Samsung has taken a creative approach to the AC charger.
The USB cable is also the charger cable - you just plug it into the small AC adapter included in the box or plug it into your PC to transfer your photos and recharge at the same time (note: charging from the PC takes about twice as long as using the AC adapter.)
