Canon Pixma MP610

The Canon PIXMA MP610 Photo All-In-One Printer is very smart looking, made with shiny black and silver plastics. It has a modern design and will look great next your computer or in your home office. Printers are becoming much lighter with new lightweight materials and the MP610 exemplifies this concept at a svelte 22 pounds. And even as printers become lighter they also add more features and become easier to use. I like the controls on the new MP610. All functions can be handled from control panel on top of the printer. The Easy-Scroll Wheel reminds me of iPod controls and makes navigating the menus simple. In fact all menus and controls are nicely laid out and logically organized. The color LCD screen is clear and bright. If you prefer to leave the receiving tray closed (it looks cleaner) the printer will automatically open the tray before it starts to print. The MP610 is EPA Energy Star compliant as all office devices should be. The MP610 does almost everything - a flatbed scanner, a color copier and a high quality photo printer. You can print directly from memory cards, PictBridge-enabled digital cameras, Bluetooth and IrDA enabled devices. It's an economical and fast photo inkjet printer with great print quality and it's a speedy printer with both a top sheet feeder and a bottom paper cassette. The only function a home office might miss is fax capability. Sample print times are shown below and were printed on plain paper. For items printed from the PC, print time begins when the computer finished spooling the file. The Color photo sample is 3008 x 2000, sRGB JPEG, 2.7MB. The Black & White photo sample is 3008 x 2000, grayscale JPEG, 1.1MB. The "graphic" sample is a 8 x 10 flyer that uses 2 colors and contains a mix of text and graphics. 8 x 10 Black & White photo from PC - 19 seconds
  • 8 x 10 Black & White photocopy - 5.4 seconds

  • 8 x 10 Color photo from PC - 18.3 seconds
  • 8 x 10 Color photocopy - 20 seconds

  • 8 x 10 Color graphic page - 19.1 seconds
  • 8 x 10 Black & White graphic page - 9 seconds

Canon reports the maximum speeds from the MP610:

  • Printing - up to 31 pages/min - B/W
  • Printing - up to 24 pages/min - Color
  • Copying - up to 31 pages/min - B/W
  • Copying - up to 24 pages/min - Color

Printing from memory cards is easy. You can crop photos before printing if desired, or brighten faces, remove red-eye and perform other edits. Printing directly from memory cards is as fast as printing from a computer. That says a lot for the MP610's internal processing power.

Home Office users will appreciate the MP610's capability to make quick color or B&W, 2-sided copies. With the supplied software you can scan documents and convert them to PDF files. Text documents can be scanned and imported directly into a word processor using the included OCR software. The scanner lid adjusts to allow thick objects, like books, to be placed on the scanner just as easily as a single sheet of paper. The Contact Image Sensor (CIS) scanner has a maximum optical resolution of 4,800 x 4,800 dpi and can go as high as 19,200 x 19,200 via interpolation.

Considering its price the MP610 does a good job of scanning photos. Scanning is simplified by the included ScanGear software for Windows. Canon's Dual Color Gamut Processing Technology automatically optimizes quality based on the type of originals you are copying.

The bottom line - With a MSRP of $199 you get a lot for your money with the MP610. It's a fast, high quality multifunction device. I think you'll be pleased by the MP610's print quality. A test print of our kayaks sample image on the glossy Canon Photo Paper Pro looked awesome. And Canon has a lot of great support online.
