SanDisk Introduces FireWire Card Reader for Ultra High Speed Transfer of Data, Images and Video
COLOGNE, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 26, 2002-- SanDisk Corporation (Nasdaq:SNDK - News) today introduced the SanDisk Ultra(TM) ImageMate(TM) Reader for the retail market. The new FireWire ImageMate Reader is designed for photographers, videographers, graphic artists and others who typically own larger capacity CompactFlashź cards and want the fastest way to transfer large amounts of data between storage cards and computers. The announcement was made at the Photokina trade show where SanDisk is demonstrating its products in Hall 5, A-11. The FireWire ImageMate Reader works with all CompactFlash cards and is designed for Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows PCs that have a FireWire port. FireWire is one of the fastest peripheral standards ever developed and offers more than 30 times the bandwidth of the popular USB port. The reader is SanDisk's first FireWire product.
Ron Glaz, digital imaging research analyst, IDC, said, "If you like speed and your goal is to create the most efficient digital workflow, then a FireWire reader is definitely the way to go. However, speed isn't the only criteria to consider. Card compatibility, build quality, price and ease of use are important factors too. SanDisk has been in the storage card and reader business a long time and their FireWire ImageMate Reader should be a major contender."
Tanya Chuang, a SanDisk product marketing manager, said, "The FireWire ImageMate Reader combines the speed advantage of the high bandwidth FireWire port with a sleek new design and compact size. It is a nice complement to the SanDisk Ultra CompactFlash line of high speed CompactFlash cards as well as our standard line of CompactFlash cards."
The FireWire ImageMate Reader features a 1394a interface for burst rates of up to 400 megabits per sec (Mbps) for real world transfer rates of up to 5 megabytes per sec. The blue LED light indicates the reader is properly connected to the computer and blinks when data is being transferred. For simplicity, the new reader has a single CompactFlash card slot that accepts both Type I and the thicker Type II formats.
For ease of use, the FireWire ImageMate Reader includes a detachable 3-foot cable and travel case. Each reader comes with a 2-year warranty and worldwide technical support.
The FireWire ImageMate Reader is expected to be available in October at thousands of retail outlets in North America, Europe, Canada, South America, Japan and Asia that carry SanDisk branded products. The readers are expected to sell for an average street price of . International prices may vary by country.
The FireWire ImageMate reader is Mass Storage Class (MSC) compliant, which allow for true "Plug-and-Play" operation when used with Windows 2000, Millennium Edition and XP. MSC is natively supported in Windows 2000, ME, XP, Apple OS 9.1.X+ and OS Xv10.1.2+. In addition, Windows XP features an AutoPlay function that automatically detects the digital content on the flash card as soon as it is inserted in the SanDisk readers. It then offers the option to launch the appropriate software application and related activities to the end user. The new reader is also compatible with Microsoft Windows 98SE.
