LAKE SUCCESS, NY, September 16, 2002 - Canon U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of Canon Inc. (NYSE CAJ) today announced the launch of three new USB 2.0 High Speed flatbed scanners -the CanoScan LiDE 50, CanoScan 5000F and CanoScan 8000F. Covering both film and platen applications, these new products deliver professional level scans with Canon technology, performance, and style.

"As a global leader in imaging technology, Canon, with the CanoScan flatbed scanner line, has maintained a solid reputation for high quality, stylish design, and versatility," said Ryoichi Bamba, senior vice president and general manager of Canon U.S.A.'s Personal Imaging Systems Group. "By constantly introducing new products with upgraded technology, Canon is able to deliver on customers' demands for power, performance and ease-of-use features."

The CanoScan LiDE 50 joins the CanoScan LiDE 20 and CanoScan LiDE 30 (announced July 25) to complete Canon's full-featured platen flatbed scanner line. The LiDE 50 sits just over an inch high, yet is loaded with an impressive feature set. A USB 2.0 High-Speed bus provides the super fast connection as well as power. Canon's easy four-button design - copy, scan, e-mail and file to PDF - gets the job done quickly and efficiently. Quality is assured with up to 1200 x 2400 dpi optical resolution, 48-bit color, both input and output, for over 281 trillion possible colors and a powerful suite of software applications including Adobe Photoshop Elements. Multiple photo scans and scanning multi-page documents to a single PDF file are now possible with the LiDE 50.

The LiDE 50 also features technology that automatically removes most minute dust and scratches on photos while scanning. Canon's exclusive Z-Lid expansion top lifts high and stays flat for scanning books and magazines while the super slim design and scanner stand allows users to scan and store the scanner on its side to save space. The LiDE 50 has an MSRP of .00**. It will be shipping November 2002.

Film and photo scanning needs are covered with the new Canon CanoScan 5000F and CanoScan 8000F. Both scanners are USB 2.0 High-Speed compatible with up to 2400 x 4800 dpi optical resolution for maintaining picture and film detail and quality even when enlarging. They both feature 48-bit depth for more than 281 colors on input and output. The CanoScan 5000F and CanoScan 8000F scanners include a film adapter that allows batch scanning of three and twelve 35 mm negative frames at a time respectively. The 8000F has a lightning fast 5-second preview when scanning photos and the CanoScan 5000F has a 6.5 second photo preview.*

Single-touch operation on both scanners activates copy, scan, e-mail or file to PDF functions. Multiple photos and multi-page scans to a single PDF file are also available on both scanners.
