On the back is an extremely high resolution 560x220 (123k pixel) 1.5-inch TFT color LCD display that is used for framing, review and menu operations. When framing, approximately 97% of the captured image is shown.

New on the P1 is a Quick Review function, while in Record mode you just press"left" on the 4-way jog switch to review the last picture taken.

To save battery power switch off the LCD and frame your shots with the optical viewfinder. The LEDs on the side indicate recording (red), AE/focus (green) and flash status (yellow). The eyelevel finder shows approximately 87% of the captured image.

The data LCD lets you know the camera settings without using the color LCD. There are icons for the battery condition, macro mode, flash mode, selftimer, white balance, recording mode, Program AE mode, Clip motion, EV compensation, TIFF mode, graphical representation of the space remaining on the Memory Stick, image size and image number are displayed.

A fast F2.8 3x optical zoom equivalent to a 35mm 36-117mm lens. With a 6x digital zoom option. Focus range is 20 inches to infinity in normal mode and 4 to 20 inches in the macro mode. Sony's High-Speed Scan autofocus technology delivers quick and accurate focusing.

The lens is protected by a builtin lens cap when it is retracted.

All of the user controls are on the back. Across the top is the Macro and Flash mode buttons. The PROGRAM AE button selects automatic, pan-focus, landscape, twilight, twilight plus or spot-meter exposure modes. The VOLUME rocker switch controls the speaker output. The LCD button turns the color LCD on and off. The DISPLAY button toggles the onscreen overlay information. The 4-way jog switch pops up the onscreen menus and allows you to navigate them and make selections.

On the right side of the camera are the I/O ports.

The yellow connector jack is for the A/V Output, mono audio and video with user-selectable NTSC or PAL format.

Behind the gray rubber flaps on the back are the high-speed USB port on the top and the DC IN for the battery charger/AC power supply on the bottom.

On the left side is the combination battery and memory compartment. The storage media is Sony's Memory Stick, an 8MB module is supplied.

Memory Sticks are available in 8, 16, 32 and 64MB capacity, with 128MB and 256MB size scheduled for 2001.

Powered by a Sony "S" series 3.6v NP-FS11 InfoLITHIUM rechargeable battery that tells you exactly how many minutes of runtime is left. A full charge requires 180 minutes and the runtime is approximately 70 minutes with the LCD on or 90 minutes with it off.

The included battery charger is also an AC power adapter. The battery is charged while it is in the camera but cannot be charged when the camera is turned on.
