World's Largest Sports Photo Measures in at 10 Gigapixels

Sports-photo-World Record.jpgThere's a new record for the world's largest photo, though this one is specific to sporting events. A 360 degree shot of Wembley Stadium comes in at 10 gigapixels and captures the faces of 90,000 fans.

The photo was a significant undertaking and is a tremendous accomplishment. It presents a full view of the stadium and the fans there. It also provides an opportunity for fans to identify themselves through Facebook tags. As a technical achievement it's quite impressive.

As a photo that's interesting to look at though, this one falls short. While other massive panoramic pictures captured a single scene that revealed fascinating looks at architecture and candid shots of people going about their daily lives, this one doesn't really pull that off.

The crowd shot does capture some interesting moments of fans cheering, but generally people are sitting and watching with dull, emotionless faces. It's a real shame that there's no way to guarantee an excited crowd, but since the picture was taken over the course of a game, there's really nothing the photographer could do.
