Toshiba is Making a Lightfield Camera for Smartphones

Toshiba-lightfield-smartphone-camera.jpgOne of the most interesting developments in camera technology over the last few years is Lytro's lightfield camera, which captures images in such a way that you can focus after you've already taken the picture. It's not a replacement for a DSLR, but there's a lot of potential for the tech, especially with cameras that are historically sub-par.

Toshiba is taking the tech and applying it to a sensor for smartphones and, presumably, tablets. The sensor is 1cm by 1cm, so don't expect to see it in any ultra-thin form quite yet, but some customers may be more than willing to allow for a little extra thickness if the trade-off is a picture that's never out of focus.
