Tokina Announces DX Lens for Sony Alpha

The Sony Alpha mount is finally getting a Tokina lens according to their latest press release.  It'll be hitting Japan first - February 24th - with a US release anticipated later this year.  This is Tokina's first lens for Sony's DSLR's, and it's pretty impressive.

The AT-X 116 Pro DX 11-16mm f/2.8 is what Tokina is calling "the world's first large-aperture wide zoom lens."  It's got a minimum aperture of f/22 and a max of f/2.8.

The design is based on the AT-X 124 PRO DX lens, but the AT-X 116 sports a shorter zoom range that Tokina says maintains the optical quality at wide apertures.  It's got an angle of view range of 104 degrees to 82 degrees.

The AT-X 116 also features Tokina's One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism.  Rather than having to change between auto and manual focus on the camera body, you can simply snap the focus ring forward or backward.

Tokina's AT-X 116 Pro DX 11-16mm f/2.8 for Sony Alpha cameras will retail for 94,500 yen, or around $1050 USD.
