The Nikon D850 Filmmaker Package is Coming!

When Nikon announced the D850 last year they said that there was going to be a filmmaker package available to buy as well at some point, but that's all they said... until now.

Nikon USA is launching a brand-new Nikon D850 Filmmaker's Kit. This is a base set of tools that provide almost everything you'd need to shoot a short film, minus a few items, for just under $5,500. The kit includes:
  • Nikon D850 DSLR (with supplied accessories)
  • AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED lens
  • AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G lens
  • AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED lens
  • Extra EN-EL15A battery
  • ME-1 Stereo Microphone
  • ME-W1 Wireless Microphone
  • Atomos Ninja Flame External Recorder
    • with power kit, docking station and coiled HDMI cable
  • Custom foam inserts (for use in a hard case, sold separately)

The lens choice is interesting as I'd personally prefer a 50mm over the 35mm, especially when it's a full frame sensor and you're getting an actual 50mm field of view. The glass they provided, however, will make it easy to capture 4K in stunning clarity.

Here's the best part of this kit, if you bought each of those items separately at B&H it would set you back around $6,200. So, you're saving $700 bucks off the bat just by buying the package. It's like getting the Ninja or the 20mm almost free. This is how it would look when you get it.

It makes a lot of sense for Nikon to offer this package as the D850 can capture full-frame 4K UHD video at 24/30 fps, it can also capture time-lapse at 8K and 4K, it has focus peaking, zebra stripes, and an HDMI output and the proper audio controls you'll need when recording video. The D850 is one of the best cameras we've ever seen, check out our review of it right here, and if you don't believe us, here's our sample gallery of images to see for yourself at how great this camera truly is.

The D850 is no slouch and people should be shooting films with this camera. Canon and Panasonic for some reason have gotten all the love in the last few years when it comes to DSLR shooting, but Nikon and Sony are right there with them. In fact, the previous generation D800 captured video so well it was used to shoot the TV show WILFRED - as the main camera - five years ago.

D850_front.jpgIf there's any critique about this kit, however... it's that it doesn't come with a case. That makes no sense. Yes, it's packaged nicely in the box and you can get you're own and customize how you want it, but it would be a lot nicer and more convenient if it just came ready to take on a shoot. It also doesn't come with a matte box, so, it's a filmmaker starter kit for sure. If they really wanted this to be an off-the-shelf solution for filmmakers it'd come with a tripod, matte box and it's own carrying case. However, saving $700 off the list price vs buying individual items is still a great value.

The Nikon D850 Filmmaker's Kit is available for pre-order NOW (click below) and will be available in stores on March 26, 2018 for a suggested retail price of $5,499.95.
