Tamron Announces Pricing and Availability for the SP 85mm F/1.8 Di VC USD (Model F016) Lens

Tamron announced two new full frame lenses in February of 2016: the SP 85mm F/1.8 Di VC USD (Model F016), and the SP 90mm f/2.8 Di VC USD 1:1 Macro (Model F017).  Both lenses are part of the Tamron SP (Super Performance) family of Premium grade lenses, and both include Tamron VC (Vibration Control) to reduce blur from camera shake.

tamron_sp85.jpegToday, Tamron issued an update to their original press release about the SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD lens, letting us know that it will be available sooner than anticipated (now, users can expect them to be available on March 24, 2016 for Canon and Nikon dSLR models), at an attractive suggested retail price point of only $749. Availability for the Sony mount version should be announced soon.

As we pointed out in an article about the new Tamron 85mm f.1.8 Di VC USD lens last month, it has a very attractive feature set that should impress photographers looking for a bright lens for portrait and other applications including low light concert or sports photography, while incorporating features like in lens Vibration Control to allow slower shutter speeds without blur from cameras shake (a feature that is missing on competing 85mm f/1.8 or brighter prime lenses).

See this article that Steve's Digicams published last month on February 22, 2016 with information about the new Tamron 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD Lens:

A brief overview of the new lens as reported in the article we reported last month:

Tamron SP 85mm F/1.8 Di VC USD (Model F016)

The new Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD lens includes both LD (Low Dispersion) and XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) optical elements to improve image sharpness and reduce color fringing, and also includes Tamron's VC (Vibration Control) to reduce blur from camera shake, with Tamron's USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) AF motor for fast and quiet Autofocus. Tamron says that the USD actuator has been improved over previous models with this feature, with newer software algorithms for faster autofocus. This new lens model also includes full time manual focus override.

This new 85mm lens also uses weather sealing to help prevent any problems from moisture build up, and uses a fluorine coating on optical elements to repel water and oil. Tamron is also using eBand  (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency), and BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coatings to improve light transmission and reduce flare and ghosting in harsher lighting.  A 9 blade rounded aperture construction is used to improve bokeh and help provide smooth out of focus highlights.

This lens will also be compatible with an optional TAMRON TAP-in Console that can connect to a computer via a USB port to allow users to update firmware and calibrate lenses without a need to ship the lenses back to Tamron. The new TAP-in Console will be released in March 2016.
