Finally! Tamron's Developing A 28-75mm F2.8 for Sony Full-Frame Cameras!

Sony has changed the camera world in the last couple years -- the A7RIII and A9 are two of the best cameras EVER made -- and finally third party lens-makers are getting ready to deliver high-quality glass made specifically for the E-mount. Along these lines, Tamron has announced the development of a high-speed 28-75mm F2.8 standard zoom lens, aka model A036.

Let's begin with why this is so exciting. Since Sony is a relative newcomer in the camera world, its camera systems have less native or third-party lenses than Canon or Nikon DSLRs. The E-mount, like micro four-thirds, is actually a very adaptable system -- you can get an adapter for almost any lens from almost any manufacturer, vintage or new, but this comes with added costs and tradeoffs in performance and functionality. Also worth noting, Sony lenses (G and G Master) are wonderful but expensive.

Tamron lenses, by comparison, typically cost hundreds or thousands of dollars less that native-brand glass, yet still offer sharp optics, smooth ergonomics, weather sealing durability, vibration reduction, and one of the best warranty systems in the market. But, at present, Tamron only has one Sony lens -- the 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 Di III VC (model B011) -- and it's only for APS-C image sensors.

In other words, Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras need more glass AND need more affordable glass that retains full functionality, and here comes Tamron with its first (of many?) new lenses for full-frame mirrorless systems. Like I said before, exciting.

Which brings us back to the A036. The moisture resistant  28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD boasts a fast/constant F2.8 maximum aperture for creamy, buttery bokeh for your portraits and street photography. Plus, with a minimum focusing distance of 7.5 inches, you can be sure that you'll get almost everything you need. Weighing 19.4 ounces, and only 4.6 inches long, the 28-75mm F2.8 will be the perfect companion to already-compact Sony camera bodies.

The A036 also features a new RXD (the Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) AF motor, which keeps the system really quiet which makes the lens great for taking videos as you'll never hear it focusing. And it's compatible with Sony's DIRECT MANUAL FOCUS, which allows their cameras to switch between manual and autofocus instantly, meaning you won't lose any functionality or performance even though it's not a native Sony lens.

That's pretty much all we know at this time -- no word on pricing or availability just yet -- but we can't wait to hear more about the A036 and test it out in person as soon as possible.
