Sony's Big Surprise: Announces A7R IV 61MP Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera

Rumors have been swirling for weeks about what mirrorless camera titan Sony would be announcing next, and today we learned the truth. The A7R series -- R for Resolution -- has been thoroughly updated with its first new image sensor since 2015.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Sony A7R IV aka the A7R Mark IV.

At the heart of this system, we'll find the world's first 61 MP full-frame CMOS image sensor that, when placed into APS-C crop mode, is still good for an industry-leading 26 MP.

And the updates just keep coming.

As the king of real-time tracking autofocus and the change-your-life-for-the-better Eye AF (animal and human) technologies, the A7R IV will be the first mirrorless camera to include Eye AF during movie recording, which should make vlogging and one-man crew shooting a breeze, even with your fastest prime lenses. Speaking of video, the A7R IV can capture 4K Ultra HD video using the full width of the sensor and 6K oversampling, or 4K with full pixel readout when the camera is in APS-C crop mode.

Focusing on productivity, Sony has improved the camera's wireless connectivity for PC tethering and wireless image transfer. Dual UHS-II SD card slots are also included in a move that's sure to frustrate Canon and Nikon mirrorless owners. And the new TruFinder OLED EVF has 1.6x more resolution than the previous model (a much-needed upgrade, in my humblest opinion).

With 15 stops of dynamic range (for still images) and 10fps of continuous burst shooting with AF & AE tracking enabled, the A7R IV is set to be a beast of a camera that can shoot everything from portraits to landscapes to action. Sony says they've also redesigned the camera's grip to make the body more ergonomic in the hand, and added more dust and moisture resistance to protect its vitals.

Sony has also developed a new grip for the camera to improve performance & battery life as well as two new microphones that will take advantage of the camera's built-in digital audio interface.

We've got a writer in New York at the Sony event right now, so be on the look for a first-look hands-on piece in the next day or so, but we wanted to make sure you saw the highlights.
