Sony Releases New Firmware Update for a7 III and a7R III with Enhanced Eye AF and More

Sony has announced the release of Software Version 3.0 Firmware for its a7 III and a7R III mirrorless cameras. The update offers several new and expanded features, including improved Real-time Eye AF and the addition of Real-time Animal Eye AF and interval shooting for time lapse.

Here's a rundown of the firmware's key updates and enhancements:
  • Real-time Eye AF - Real-time Eye-AF for the a7R III and a7 III offers an AI-driven eye detection system powered by machine learning. This tech allows the camera to detect and focus on the human eye even when subjects are looking down, turning, backlit, or partially blocked. Real-time Eye-AF can be used in AF-C mode via half-press of the shutter button.
  • Real-time Animal Eye AF - AI-driven animal eye detection is also now available through the a7R III and a7 III via advanced subject recognition, enabling the camera to detect and track animal eyes. Dogs and cats are currently supported, but support for more animals and improvements to the feature's tracking performance will also be offered in future updates.
  • Interval Shooting - A built-in interval timer has been added as well. The timer can be set for anywhere between 1 and 60 seconds and supports a total number of shots from 1 to 9999. In addition, AE tracking sensitivity can be set to "High," "Mid," or "Low" to help minimize changes in exposure.
