Sony's Awesome New RX0 Action Cam (Move Over, GoPro?)

At IFA 2017, Sony unveiled a new $700 action cam dubbed the RX0 (that's a ZERO, not a letter O). It's small and compact, but don't let its looks fool you. This has more in common with the Alexa mini than it does with other current action cams. How's that? Because while GoPro and similar action cams use a 1/2.3" image sensors, the RX0 boasts a 15.2MP 1" (13.2mm x 8.8mm) Exmor RS™ CMOS image sensor, which is effectively something you'd see in Sony's other RX Series cameras. Plus you get --

  • ZEISS® Tessar T 24mm lens with F4.0 aperture
  • Anti-Distortion Shutter -- 1/32000 super-high-speed shutter
  • 4K Clean HDMI output
  • Full 1080/60p HD internal video recording
  • Up to 960fps/1000fps6 super slow motion
  • Up to 16fps continuous still image shooting
  • Waterproof down to 33ft
  • Shockproof up to 2m (6.5ft)
  • Crushproof up to 200kg (440lbf)
  • ISO 125 - 12,800

Yes, the RX0 can be submerged in 10m of water without an external housing and shoot 960 frames per second! Sony even states that the camera should survive a 2m drop and can withstand 200g of crushing force, but that's not even the coolest part. You can connect up to five RX0s with it's multi-camera, multi-view function and run them simultaneously using only Sony's PlayMemories app. If you happen to need more, you can connect up to 15 of them together with the Sony FA-WRC1M wireless commander and shoot Matrix-like bullet time images.

On the surface, GoPro should be a little worried because Sony's image sensors and optics are second to none -- just look at the A9 and A7sii -- and this is an incredibly compact and durable camera with some excellent features. That said, it's double the price of the flagship GoPro, which most importantly doesn't need an external data recorder to capture 4K video. Still, this is a very impressive little camera we can't wait to try.

The RX0 will be available in October for around $700.
