Sony Investing 1.2 Billion Dollars Into CMOS Production

Sony-CMOS.jpgThe folks over at Sony are putting some real money into their CMOS image sensor production - a total of $1.2 billion. That's a huge investment that Sony hopes will pay off big.

Part of the investment will go towards full ownership of a facility once shared between Sony and Toshiba, as well as refurbishment and equipment for that facility.

Sony says that the money will help to solidify the company's position as a leader in sensor technology and will help them to produce and develop sensors like the Exmor and Exmor R, which are used in both phone cameras and point-and-shoots.

Production will increase significantly. Sony says that in addition to the 25,000 sensors it pushes out each month, another 25,000 will be added for a total of 600,000 sensors a year.
