Sony HX99 Brings Big Zoom to a Small Camera!

It wasn't but 10 years ago that tiny all-in-one cameras were at the top of the sales market. But then came smartphones and sales plummeted. Sony is out to reinvigorate the market with its sharp new DSC-HX99, a pocket powerhouse of an all-in-one for less than $450 dollars.

How do you go head-to-head with a smartphone? Combine the compact size, connectivity, and ease of use of a smartphone with a real ZEISS lens that has an equivalent zoom range of 24-720mm. Throw in 4K and image stabilization and you have a winner.

The HX99 is the world's smallest camera with an effective zoom range of 24-720mm that can be optically doubled to 1440mm. All of this is shot through a high-magnification ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T lens. This is the kind of sharp glass you can't get on a smartphone.

The camera has an 18.2-megapixel back-illuminated Exmor RTM CMOS sensor and uses Sony's BIONZ XTM image-processing system to reduce noise at high ISO settings.

This little powerhouse also has an optical steady shot allowing you to get crystal clear images when you zoom in without the use of a tripod.

Did I mention it shoots 4K video? Sony states:

"The camera records approx. 1.6 times as much information as is required for 4K video output, resulting in outstanding resolution with reduced moiré and jaggies. Videos also accurately reproduce textures and fine details to an extent not possible with full HD"

The HX99 has super fast autofocus with Sony's Eye AF, which is great when using the camera's 10fps burst or continuous shooting mode.

It has a touch screen than flips up 180 degrees making it perfect for selfies or vlogging. It's got Wi-Fi, Blutooth and NFC. You can use the Sony PlayMemories Mobile app to control the camera wirelessly, changing the shutter and the zoom right from your phone or tablet. You can even geotag your photos if it's connected by Bluetooth to your phone.
