Sony Recalls DSC-P1 Cameras Because of Battery Defect

This just in from the Photo Marketing Association's Daily News Update:

Sony Corp., Tokyo, Japan, will conduct checkups and repair free of charge digital cameras with battery problems, Kyodo News reported Wednesday, citing company officials. Subject to the recall are all of Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-P1 cameras, which were sold from October 2000, the officials said, adding production of the camera ended in September 2001.

Sony refused to disclose the sales volume of the model, but industry analysts estimate it at 500,000 units worldwide, the report said.

Sony said it will check the camera's main unit and the battery charger and repair defective parts and replace related software.

The recall follows complaints from users about faster-than-usual battery shutoffs or possible battery drainage.
