RED Gives up on Consumer Grade Cameras - DSLRs Own the Market

If you're into video as well as photography, you've probably ogled the ultra-expensive, but oh so cool RED cameras. Their high-end cameras are some of the best around, and the news of a camera aimed at enthusiasts was exciting, until it turned out it wasn't happening.

"We recently came to the conclusion that, indeed, we cater to the professional market," writes Jim Jannard, the founder of RED. "We want to build the best tools possible for those that want to "man up". There are plenty of companies dedicated to selling prosumer (short for "almost right") cameras. We aren't going to be one of them."

Jannard is right up front when he talks about the delays in the Scarlet camera, going as far as to say that one of the problems was "We had no idea what we were doing."

The other reason for the Scarlet's delay and eventual price hike is that DSLRs are so incredibly capable when it comes to use for video, and so popular with consumers.
