MIT Develops a Camera That Can See Around Corners

MIT Camera.gifRamesh Raskar, a researcher at MIT, has created a camera that uses laser technology to see around corners. It does this by bouncing the lasers off of a wall in incredibly short bursts, and then using incredibly complex algorithms to build a 3D image of what the camera can see.

Before you go getting too excited about what this camera can do it's important to remember that this is brand new technology and doesn't exactly look like you'd expect. Right now the images are very basic and only really work in a controlled laboratory environment. Too much complexity and the camera gets confused.

There are plenty of ideas behind the new camera, but the initial application is going to be medical. The team is working towards an endoscope that they hope to have a prototype for in the next two years.
