Kodak Printomatic is Just Like a Polaroid Snap... Because It is

Like records, film and film products are making a comeback. It's not just nostalgia either, younger generations are coming to see the value in these products. With a record it's tactile and you have to listen to a whole album the way people used to, not just jump around in some Spotify playlist. With developed photographs, you get a different view on the world. It's not as shiny and has some grit in it.

Kodak and Kodak products have been in demand lately, therefore it's no shock that they announced their own instant camera called the 'Printomatic'. A name which in itself strikes a bit of nostalgia in the consumer, harking back to a time when technology was new and exciting. It has a 10-megapixel instant Zinc print camera. It doesn't require a printer or use ink cartridges. You simply add the zinc paper and... out comes pictures like this.

The Kodak Printomatic has features like:

  • Maximum resolution of 10-megapixel camera
  • Built-in flash
  • Built-in lithium ion battery
  • Two picture modes: vibrant color, black & white
  • Low battery indicator
  • Printer status indicator
  • MicroSD™ card indicator
  • MicroSD™ card slot
  • Slots for neck strap
  • Grey or yellow color options

If this camera looks familiar to you it should, as it's basically the same camera as a Polaroid snap. They do have one major difference though -- price. The Kodak camera is expected to launch almost $30 dollars cheaper than the SNAP. That's significant. With a $69.99 suggested MSRP the camera moves into the affordable territory, making it cheap enough that it could sway casual photographers into trying something new. Let's be honest, it's a pain to print digital pictures. Most people today simply upload them to a service and have them printed and sent to them. A service like that provides size advantages for sure, but the Printomatic provides convenience and instant gratification.

Honestly, if they really wanted this product to succeed they should sell it for $19.99 with no zinc paper included, maybe even make a limited number of cameras available for free. Just pay for shipping and buy the paper separately. That's where they make the real money anyway... it's all in the paper.
