It almost seems like we're inundated daily with announcements of the next latest and greatest smartphone whom all purport to be better than the ones that came just hours before them.

The latest is the new Google Pixel 2. Its camera, like the new iPhone 8, X or the Samsung Note 8, is by far better than the point-and-shoots from a few years ago AND, based on test results from DxOMark Mobile, Google says their new Pixel 2 has the best Smart Phone Camera ever.

The thing with modern smartphones is that until lens and image sensor technology changes, the camera's ability to take amazing shots comes down to processing. Like Apple, the Pixel 2 has a "portrait" function that lets you take shallow focus images. The camera can push and pull under or overexposed images and has a good low light capability. But again, it's going to be the software that makes these cameras stand out. Take one of the more interesting things on the Pixel 2 called GOOGLE LENS.

This is like walking around with a knowledgeable old uncle. Point the camera at something and it recognizes what it is, giving you facts and history. Though I wonder how much is up to the camera's software recognition than it is to the phone's GPS. It's much easier for their mapping software to use your compass and location to say "oh they're looking at the Louvre" than for a camera to recognize a very specific location. I'm guessing they work hand in hand. None of that would work though without having impressive specs. Which the Pixel 2 has:

  • Water-resistant metal unibody
  • The latest Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 835 processor
  • Up to 7 hours of battery on 15 minutes of charging
  • pixel 2 5.0" AMOLED screen (16:9) FHD 1920 x 1080
