Hacked Firmware Will Enable 4K Video on the Canon Rebel T2i

canon_t2i_4K-Hack.jpgA YouTube user named Earz62801 has announced that he'll be releasing hacked firmware for the Canon Rebel T2i that will allow users to shoot in 4K resolution - that's four times the resolution currently offered by HDTVs.

If this comes through, it could mean huge things for the Rebel T2i, which - at only $800 - would be the most affordable way to shoot in 4K. It could also mean big things for amateur filmmakers and budding cinematographers.

You're going to be a little limited on recording time by going 4K. At 2K, which is fairly close to current HD standards, you get a full 91 seconds. At 4K you get a mere six seconds. You'll need a Class 10 card to handle it too - anything slower just won't keep up.

You can check out the announcement video on YouTube and hopefully find out more when the firmware launches on 1/1/11.
