GoPro Reveals New HERO8 Action Cam

GoPro has detailed the latest addition to its HERO line of action cameras, the HERO8. Pre-orders are now live via GoPro's website for $399 with shipments set to launch on October 15. Units will also be available via select retailers starting the week of October 20.

The GoPro HERO8 is a compact and lightweight action cam with a rugged, waterproof design and four digital lenses, including Narrow, Linear, Wide, and SuperView options. The device supports Pro-Quality 4K60 video, 1080p Live Streaming, 8x slo-mo ultra-high frame rate 1080p240 recording, 12MP photo capture, and RAW in all photo modes.

In addition, the new model offers HyperSmooth 2.0 video stabilization with improved pitch-axis stabilization, a new Boost mode, support for all resolutions and frame rates, and in-app horizon leveling. Likewise, the unit includes TimeWarp 2.0 functionality, which can automatically adjust speed based on motion, scene detection, and lighting with the ability to slow back down to real time with a simple tap. Voice Control capabilities with 14 commands and a wind-optimized front-facing mic for improved audio recording are provided as well.

And beyond the base HERO8 model, GoPro has also announced three additional modular accessories:

  • Media Mod ($79.99) - Adds shotgun-mic directional audio and two cold shoe mounts, along with Type-C, HDMI and 3.5mm external mic adapter ports.
  • Display Mod ($79.99) - A folding front- or rear-facing 1.90-inch display that attaches to the top of the Media Mod.
  • Light Mod ($49.99) - A waterproof (to 33 feet), rechargeable, wearable, and gear-mountable light with diffuser that can be attached to the Media Mod or a GoPro mount.

The GoPro Mods will be available for pre-order in December.
