FotoNation to Provide Wireless Technology to GPS Handhelds

Imaging and connectivity solutions company FotoNation, Burlingame, Calif., was selected by Trimble, Sunnyvale, Calif., to provide wireless PTP-IP technology for Trimble's Mapping & Geographic Information System (GIS) handheld product line. Trimble's new TrimPix technology, enabled by FotoNation, links high resolution digital photographs to GIS features using Wi-Fi capable Nikon cameras.

As each photo is taken, the Nikon camera automatically transfers the digital image wirelessly to Trimble's handheld GPS receiver or field computer. Once the photo has been transferred, it is linked to GIS data for use with mapping and searching applications. Current Nikon cameras supporting the Wi-Fi capability include the affordable Coolpix models P1, P2, P3, S6 and S7c.
