Father and Son Team Capture HD Video From Space

Space!.jpgRemember so many summers back when your dad took you to fly a kite or shoot off a model rocket? Those simple pleasures don't cut it for Luke and Max Geissbuhler, the pair that recently sent a weather balloon into space with an HD camcorder attached.

Luke and his 7 year old son Max spent a great deal of time testing their equipment, prepping for launch, planning for the perfect weather conditions and eventually settled on an August day to send up their balloon. Attached was an HD video camera, along with an iPhone 4, which sends out the GPS signal needed to retrieve the camera after it parachutes down to earth.

After around an hour, the camera finally climbs high enough to capture some absolutely stunning footage from space. Ten minutes later, the balloon reaches its breaking point and the assembly plummets to earth.

You can find a short video at the Brooklyn Space Program website, which will soon be offering a how-to book and full video of the flight.
