DJI Announces the Zenmuse XT - a New Aerial Camera with FLIR Thermal Imaging Technology

DJI is a familiar name if you are interested in Aerial Photography, as they are the Premiere Manufacturer of Drones like the Phantom line that many photographers rely on to get photos and videos of their subjects from the air, or their flagship Inspire line (shown below with their new XT camera).

xt_drone1.jpegDJI also offers some very nice cameras and gimbals that allow capturing of high quality still photos and video from their aerial platforms, and DJI has continued to expand its camera lineup to allow its aerial platforms to be used for more applications using DJI equipment, instead of photographers needing to source gear from other manufacturers.

For example, DJI announced the Zenmuse X5 and X5R in September to give photographers higher quality cameras for aerial photography via interchangeable lens models using Micro Four Thirds Sensors with very high dynamic range and very advanced features. See this article from Steve's Digicams that we published in September 2015 for more information about those new cameras:

Now, it looks like DJI wants to offer an even wider variety of camera types for Aerial Photography, as they've announced a collaboration with FLIR Systems to develop Thermal Imaging Systems for Aerial Photography. DJI's first camera using this technology will be the Zenmuse XT, what DJI is calling the "world's most powerful aerial thermal imaging camera".

This new camera integrates a FLIR Thermal Imager with DJI's signature gimbal stabilization and Lightbridge video transmission technology. It uses the same gimbal mount as the DJI Zenmuse X3, X5 and X5R cameras and will be fully compatible with the DJI Inspire 1 and Matrix M100 aerial platforms. It should be available in the first quarter of 2016.

DJI and FLIR Systems Collaborate to Develop Aerial Thermal-Imaging Technology

First thermal camera designed for aerial applications planned for first quarter of 2016

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- DJI, the world leader in unmanned aerial vehicle technology, announced a collaboration with FLIR Systems to develop thermal-imaging technology for aerial applications.

Combining DJI's leadership in aerial platforms and FLIR's first-class thermal-imaging technology expands the uses of aerial systems to provide different types of sensory data essential for firefighting, agriculture, inspection and several other industrial-use cases.

"Almost every week we see new applications of our aerial technology," said DJI Founder and CEO Frank Wang. "Adding thermal imaging as an additional sensor options for aerial platforms will open up new AND innovative uses for our users, whether it's gaining strategic insight into how their crops are growing or more efficiently understanding the spread of fires."

The first result from DJI and FLIR's collaboration will be the release of the Zenmuse XT -- the world's most-powerful aerial thermal-imaging camera -- in the first quarter of 2016.

The Zenmuse XT will seamlessly integrate a top-quality FLIR thermal-imager with DJI's signature gimbal stabilization and Lightbridge video-transmission technology. Using the same gimbal mount as DJI's Zenmuse X3, X5 and X5R cameras for filmmaking, the Zenmuse XT will be fully compatible with the DJI Inspire 1 and Matrice M100 aerial platforms.

FLIR's market-leading thermal camera can generate images up to a resolution of 640x512.

"By creating a strategic collaboration that combines DJI's world-leading drone technology and FLIR's heritage in thermal imagers, we're accelerating our growth potential in the commercial drone market," said Andy Teich, President and CEO of FLIR. "It's truly a better together opportunity, and we're excited to help celebrate the launch of the Zenmuse XT today, the first of many products to come under the collaboration."
